Why the same texts appear in conversations for multiple contacts

Two contacts can have the same phone number. When they do, incoming and outgoing texts for that number can appear in each eligible contact's existing conversation, including earlier texts. The phone receives only one copy of each outgoing text. The conversation screen does not change.

What happens when you start a text

You can open the conversation for the contact you selected. If another contact in your account uses the same phone number, the text and any reply also appear in that contact's eligible conversation. You do not have to switch to a different contact to see the reply.

An incoming reply is marked unread in only one conversation. Its copies in the other contacts' conversations are already marked read, so one phone reply does not create several unread alerts.

For a Smart Campaign such as News, Simple Downline chooses one eligible contact for the campaign's subscriptions and personalized message. It sends one text to the shared phone number and shows that text in the eligible conversations for the number.

Stop updates to one contact's conversation

Open that contact, choose Edit, turn on Text Opt Out, and save. This stops new shared texts from being added to that contact's conversation and stops texts addressed to that contact. Texts already in the conversation stay visible. Other contacts using the number keep their own Text Opt Out settings and can continue receiving shared conversation updates.

If you turn Text Opt Out off later, new shared texts can appear again. Texts from the time the contact was opted out are not filled in automatically.

If the person texted STOP

A STOP reply blocks outgoing texts to that phone number across your account, regardless of which contact a campaign or user selected. Turning off a contact's Text Opt Out switch does not clear this block. The person using the phone must text START or SUBSCRIBE from that number to resume outgoing texts. Simple Downline still records those STOP and START messages so the status is visible.

Earlier conversations

Earlier texts are added to eligible shared-number conversations when the phone number can be matched. Contacts currently marked Text Opt Out keep their existing history without receiving added earlier texts. Simple Downline did not previously record the date of every manual opt-out, so it cannot reconstruct every earlier sharing period.

If a text appears under the wrong phone number, or an earlier text is missing, contact support with the contact names and the phone number.
